The Read "Write" Adult Literacy Program's Mission
The mission of the Read "Write" Adult Literacy Program is to help adults increase their reading, writing, and speaking skills by offering adult literacy programs and related services in Torrance County and adjacent communties. |
Where New Mexico Stands in Terms of Literacy Skills 20% of New Mexicans ages 16 and older have literacy skills at level 1, the lowest level on a scale of 1 to 5. Each literacy level is associated with a specific set of skills that are generally accepted as necessary for full participation in society. Individuals at level 1, for example, have difficulty locating simple information in a news article or applying basic math to determine the total on a sales receipt.
In Torrance County, nearly 23%, or one in every four adults, has level 1 literacy skills and 50% are at level 2 or below.*
Only 12% of all jobs today can be managed with literacy skills at level 1 or below. Level 2 skills are needed for 24% of all jobs, and nearly two-thirds of the labor force need literacy skills beyond level 2.
Skills an adult at Level I usually cannot perform: Cannot locate eligibility from a table of employee benefits. Cannot locate intersections on a street map. Cannot identify or enter background information on a social security card application. Cannot total costs of purchases. Cannot locate names and phone numbers in the Telephone Directory.
*Figures for literacy levels are based on estimates using 2000 Census data. |
